Sharp sensors

JI Case Europe, the construction and equipment subsidiary of US firm Tenneco, ushered in Intermat '94 with a factory visit to Crepy-en-Valois.

The French factory, which in recent years has had 300 million francs pumped into production tooling, has now added the 1188 Powersensor excavator to its production schedule.

A replacement for the 1088, the 1188 not only offers im proved cycle times, but is also sharp on style.

Some of its features include Powersensing hydraulics, a new chassis, a curved boom - already present on the 1288 - and a restyled cab.

Over its predecessor, the 1188 Powersensor also offers greater service accessibility.

The Powersensor hydraulic system is fed by two main pumps: one twin block pump with variable displacement supplies the drive motors and the attachments, while the second monobloc pump, with fixed displacement, powers the upperstructure swing and absorbs and uses the flow not needed in the attachment circuit. Respective flow for the pumps is 320 litres/min and 88 litres/min. Flow to the monobloc system represents a 32 litre/min in crease on the 1088s. Pressure remains at 350 bar. The system is designed for independent and simultaneous control of all work and travel functions.

'With a different type of pump the 1188 has overcome the slight slew problems of the 1088,' says UK construction and equipment sales manager, David Sunshine.

In operation, the excavator's on-board computer synchronises the hydraulic flow to the engine's speed in each of the three modes. Powersensing ensures that there is always full power available at the pumps.

Lift capacity for the 1188 remains the same as the 1088, as does the engine size. Power is supplied by a sound-proofed Case 5.9 litre six cylinder turbo charged diesel engine with maximum output of 104.4kW.

The five available versions of the 1188 comprise two tracked and three wheeled models. Operating weights range from 21.3t to 23.4t for the tracked machines and 18.8t to 20.4t for the wheeled models.

To date, Crepy-en-Valois has produced 17 1188 excavators. This July, the first 1188 will be manufactured for retail sale. Using the current factory processes, many of which have been automated, average assembly time for an excavator in the 12t-30t class is between nine to 10 days.

In the forthcoming months, as part of a three year restructuring programme, Crepy-en-Valois will also be used to manufacture Case's range of backhoe loaders. These are currently produced in Vierzon.
