Skin cancer warnings renewed
Increasing incidence of skin cancer has prompted health officials
to renew their call for construction workers to cover up during the
summer months.
Dr Paul Davies, senior health policy official at the HSE said:
'Although in our climate the sun is not as strong as in the
tropics, nonetheless, too much sunlight can be damaging. Allowing
skin to burn and blister is not just painful at the time but can
lead later on to more serious consequences - particularly skin
cancer.'
In England and Wales around 35,000 new cases of skin cancer are
registered every year. There are around 1,600 deaths. Working out
of doors is known to increase the risk of contracting skin cancer,
though by taking precautions, such as wearing a long sleeved shirt
and wide brimmed hat, that risk can be substantially reduced.
