Work re-starts on troubled Norfolk job
Work has finally restarted at Balfour Beatty's œ6 million sea
defence project off the East Anglian Coast at Sea Palling.
A series of accidents has led to the contractor falling behind on
work to build four protective reefs for the National Rivers
Authority.
Two people have been killed while working on the project and work
came to a standstill in mid-April after a crane barge broke loose
in heavy seas and was damaged.
The crane was back in position and working by 15 May but after only
two days' work bad weather halted the project again for a
week.
Work eventually got underway last Sunday, though Balfour Beatty's
plan to introduce a side-loading barge to speed up operations was
delayed until later in the week while a problem with the barge's
screw was eliminated.
If the weather remains favourable a second side loading barge will
be added to the project in a bid to complete the contract on time
and before winter when bad weather will again make further progress
unlikely.
