Jubilee Tunnel starts
Tunnelling has begun on the œ1.8 billion Jubilee Line
extension of the London Underground with the construction of the
first trial section under the capital (see pic).
A joint venture of Costain Taylor Woodrow, which is building the
œ76 million London Bridge station (Contract 104), has begun
the excavation of a 40m long 11.3m dia trial tunnel.
The tunnel was started from the base of a 20m-deep access shaft
sunk near the existing London Bridge Station.
It is one of the few to be excavated on the Jubilee Line extension
using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method. The technique involves
using excavators to dig the tunnel while supporting the roof with
shotcrete and roof bolts.
Tunnelling has also begun on contract 102, Balfour Beatty-Amec's
œ157 million job at Westminster and Waterloo.
Purpose-made tunnel boring machines are not due on site until later
in the summer.
