After last year's successful launch of the world's first diesel ATV
at SED, Oxon-based EP Barrus has gone one step further and launched
two more Polaris D-BAT diesel machines, specifically targeted at
the UK market.
Custom-built by Barrus at its factory in Bicester, new features on
the D-BAT 400HD 4x4 and 6x6 machines include: an adjustable
windshield, dual hydraulic disc braking system together with a
mechanical footbrake incorporating the main parking brake, heated
handlebars and large diameter 25" low pressure tyres with
tractor-style tread for increased traction and stability. Extra
wide mudflaps fitted as standard keep mud spray to a minimum.
In response to recent market research, the vibrant livery of
earlier ATVs has been replaced with army green and a lot of
attention focused on storage.
Both the 4x4 and 6x6 models feature high impact polyethylene racks
designed to carry a wide range of materials including fencing
posts. Front racks on both machines offer five internal
weatherproof compartments, including an 18" deep tapered
section.
The rear rack on the D-BAT400 HD 4x4 - not featured on the 6x6 -
offers an additional 180lbs load capacity and a visible sight
aperture for viewing the tow ball when hooking up to a trailer. In
addition it has ten lashing points and raised sides to improve load
security.
Chassis clearance is not only enhanced by the introduction of a
Polaris chassis built to Barrus specs, but also by the machine's
new tractor tyres.
Assembly of the new machines involves Barrus buying in the US
Polaris rolling chassis - now 2" wider - complete with wheels and
brakes. It then fits them with a Yanmar 406cc diesel engine and
other components at Bicester.
A new high level air intake for engine and transmission cooling
means that the new ATVs can be driven 'wellie-high' without the
engine taking in water.
The D-BAT400HD 6x6 has all the features of the 4x4 with an extended
and heavy duty rear chassis, larger chassis with backrest and a
centre pivoting tilting load carrier.
With respective prices of œ4,995 and œ5,695, the D-BAT
400HD 4x4 and D-BAT 400HD 6x6, described as 'environmentally
friendly' by md Robert Glenn, are likely to steal some of Land
Rover's current limelight.
