Next week's Epsom Derby looks one of the most open Blue Ribband
contests of recent years. There is, at this stage, no outstanding
form line. And a key indicator is likely to be the leading jockeys'
own choice of mounts. Michael Kinane, for example, was not expected
to make a decision on whether to ride King's Theatre or Foyer until
the middle of this week.
The probable market leader, Erhaab, does not inspire much
confidence. He seems falsely priced on the strength of a single
trial win this year - albeit an impressive one.
The most consistent colt has been Colonel Collins, who was a big
'talking horse' on his debut at last summer's Newmarket July
meeting and has performed well in the best company ever since.
Colonel Collins looks the form choice. But, at an early price of
20-1, Foyer must rate as a good each way selection. He is by
Sadler's Wells out of Ela Romara, who won the Nassau Stakes. On
that breeding, he is virtually guaranteed to stay the
mile-and-a-half trip.
Last week, Castel Rosselo was mentioned as a possible winner of the
Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot following his game win over Newbury's
straight mile. He had earlier run well in the Lincoln and appeared
to be given too much to do when unplaced at Kempton. Publication of
the Hunt Cup weights puts Castel Rosselo on an ideal mark at 8st
2lb.
Royal Ascot will also be the next target for Dumaani, who confirmed
his promise as a top class horse when winning over seven furlongs
at Newmarket last week.
