Electricians threaten strike action over pay
Pay talks in the electrical contracting industry have collapsed and
operatives are threatening selective strike action.
Electricians represented by the AEEU have rejected a final offer of
a 12-month pay freeze to be followed by a 2.5% increase in basic
rates from 7 January 1995. They say they will consider the
practicability of 'strategic and selective industrial action within
the industry'. The union's biennial conference at Scarborough this
month will decide this.
General secretary Paul Gallagher has stated: 'The long-term
intentions of the Electrical Contractors Association need to be
spelled out quite clearly in as much as not only are they not
prepared to consider any increases for 1994, they are also not
prepared to join with the union to discipline and police the
unrestricted use of self-employed and agency labour. They have also
given notice of their intention to reduce travelling time and
fares.'
