Cats through the Tunnel
On 19 May 1994 - the day that the Channel Tunnel officially opened
for freight transport - a Cat 428B became the world's first backhoe
to be transported through the tunnel.
The only open freight to travel on 'Le Shuttle', the Cat machine,
positioned between trucks with enclosed cargoes, left Folkestone at
11.40am and arrived in Calais at 12.15am. Delivery destination for
the 428B was Bergerat Monnoyeur, Paris, France.
On the same day, a Cat 312 excavator - en route from Grenoble to
McCormick, Ireland - travelled through the tunnel in the opposite
direction from Calais to Folkestone.
This latest addition to the Cat 300 family of excavators has been
sold via McCormick MacNaughton's Cork office to M Herley in Cork.
Caterpillar's booking on Le Shuttle's first official freight trip
is aimed at identifying whether the route will enhance customer
service and cut delivery times for urgently needed
components.
