I-R launches first XL crawler drill

The XL-635 hydraulic crawler drill from Ingersoll-Rand is the first member of the company's new XL family of fully hydraulic drifter drills for quarry and construction applications.

With an operating weight of 11,500kg, the XL-635 rig produces blastholes from 76mm-102mm. Unit length is 8390mm, width 2565mm and height 2800mm. Powered by a heavy duty CAT 3116TA water-cooled diesel engine delivering 160kW, the unit offers a tramming speed of 3.3km/h, gradeability of 30deg and track oscillation of +/-10deg. The engine is directly coupled to a high capacity 7.2m3/min rotary screw air compressor with a rated pressure of 8.8kg/cm2.

Ingersoll-Rand's YH 85V hydraulic drifter features an automatic variable stroke design to match blow energy and percussion rate to rock hardness.

Weighing in at 300kg, the drifter offers an impact energy of 30-50kg/m with frequency range of 2400-3400bpm and rotation torque of up to 60kg/m at 0-185 rpm.

The XL-635 is suitable for use with 51mm drilling rods. In deep and broken ground conditions, these are claimed to improve hole straightness.

The unit is also equipped with a new simpler design of mechanical rod changer. The changer, which offers a faster cycle time for improved drilling speed, is designed to carry five 51mm rods and six 45mm rods. All rods are 3660mm long.

Other standard features of the XL-635 include a new air-conditioned cab offering reduced interior noise levels and improved visibility.

A remote-controlled rod greaser and auto-throttle system enhance operator control of the drilling operation.
