Nabarro Nathanson's champagne party for construction clients should have been the perfect end to the working day - at least that was how the md of one builder had anticipated the event. But neither he nor Nabarro Nathanson had bargained for last Wednesday's train strike. Instead of guests flocking in their hundreds, only a remnant struggled through the scorching heat to the law firm's prestigious City offices. Our man was rewarded with his glass of bubbly, but by about 7pm he was wilting on his feet. 'I was just about to head off for some fresh air when someone stopped me and said, "We're just about to start the speeches." I just thought, Oh no!' He goes on to paint a vivid picture of construction dignitaries clutching furniture and walls to combat heat exhaustion as Sir Bill Francis addressed them.
