More than 80% of the Building Research Establishment's income still
comes from the Department of the Environment four years after it
was made an executive agency.
Of the BRE's œ41.5 million income, œ34.1 million comes
from the DoE with œ3.2 million being generated by the
Technical Consultancy arm.
The figures are from the BRE's annual review published this week
which outlines the projects under way by the organisation.
The Technical Consultancy arm of the Fire Research Station carried
out work on the Channel Tunnel in modelling fires in the shuttles.
The FRS computer simulation model for smoke and fire spread,
JASMINE, was used to model real fire tests in scenarios defined by
Eurotunnel.
The model evaluated the effects on smoke spread and visibility
conditions in a variety of circumstances at a lower cost than real
models.
The Research Establishment has also developed its facility at the
massive airship hangar at Cardington in Bedfordshire where large
buildings can be erected and tested for live and dead loading.
