Shore is smooth
The new Spacebrace shoring system from Mechshore solved a tight
problem recently on one of Britain's oldest motorways, the M6
between junctions 30-32.
This section is currently being widened, and contractor Balfour
Beatty is installing several spilt fuel interceptor tanks to
prevent pollution of local rivers and reservoirs. The problem arose
at Junction 31 where new slip roads are being constructed over the
river Ribble.
The plans required installation of an interceptor measuring over
17m long in an excavation only 17.8 x 4.2m and 6m deep, where poor
ground conditions were likely to produce high loadings on shoring
frames and sheeting.
Mechshore used the Spacebrace units in combination with three
levels of shoring and Lars sen pile section sheeting. The
Spacebrace units replaced the cross bracing that would otherwise
have been necessary, providing a clear span into which the tank
could be lowered. Long Spacebrace stanchions were then wedged into
holes in the blinding layer.
As a result of the smooth in stallation this system offered,
Mechplant was asked to provide temporary works schemes for all the
interceptor tank placements on Balfour Beatty's section of the
works.
