Ebbsfleet for Chunnel link
Blue Circle's Ebbsfleet site in Kent is likely to be chosen as the
intermediate station on the Channel Tunnel fast rail link.
Transport Secretary John MacGregor is expected to make an
announcement about the station this week.
The news will be a blow to the hopes of the London Borough of
Newham and its private sector partners, P&O, Tarmac, Mowlem and
Land Securities. The group has been lobbying for a station at
Stratford.
However, it is thought that a concession will be made to President
of the Board of Trade Michael Heseltine and Environment Secretary
John Gummer, who have been pressing for the Stratford site to help
in the regeneration of the East Thames Corridor.
Provision will be made for a deep box at Stratford so that a
station could be constructed at a later date, should the private
sector operators of the fast rail link feel it was needed and
economically viable.
