Balfour keeps Jersey quiet
Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering has built an acoustic canopy over
one of its sites in Jersey to minimise dust and noise for the
people of St Helier while it builds a new sewer.
The massive canopy completely encloses a 35m deep access shaft and
a second access tunnel. The two allow construction of 1000m-long
tunnel using drill and blast and a tunnel boring machine. The
tunnel is part of a flood relief project for St Helier which will
separate storm and foul water to prevent the existing system
surcharging in wet weather.
The œ8.8 million project is expected to be completed in
November 1995.
