Manslaughter trial

Two men have been committed for trial after appearing at Liverpool City Magistrates Court on Monday accused of manslaughter following the electrocution of a site foreman. David McDonnell, 27, of Widnes, died instantly at the Cruden Construction housing site in Toxteth on April 21. The case against David Hallmark, 38, and Clifford Grace, 45, will be heard in the Liverpool Crown Court on 16 September.



Savings of solicitor advocacy

City law firm McKenna & Co reckons that savings offered by solicitor advocacy in planning cases, compared with the cost of using both solicitor and barrister, run to more than 30% of total fees. Under this service, launched by McKenna this week, a solicitor appears on a client's behalf as an advocate, instead of instructing a barrister.

Stadium award

The Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield has won the UK Stadia Design Award in a contest sponsored by the Sports Council and British Steel. Other finalists in the competition were the East Stand redevelopment at Twickenham rugby ground and the Sir John Hall Stand at Newcastle United Football Club.



Aggregates sales up

Sales of construction aggregates grew substantially in the second quarter of this year. Crushed rock sales were up 15% on the same period last year, sand and gravel sales were up 16%, surfacing materials were up 11% and ready mixed concrete sales were up by 10% according to the latest BACMI survey.



Safe with Swift

Reinforced concrete contractor Swift Structures is the 1994 winner of the Bovis Worksafe award. The company has now won twice, the first time being in 1992.



TH braced for redundancies

Trafalgar House said this week that the cost of restructuring its poorly performing engineering divisions would be around œ15 million. Redundancies are expected to be in the hundreds.



Heathfield CBC chairman

Bob Heathfield, managing director of Trafalgar House Construction's UK construction sector has been appointed chairman of the Chartered Building Company (CBC) Board, part of the CIoB.



Record WS Atkins turnover

WS Atkins has produced a record turnover, up by 11% to œ131 million and a profit before contributions up 32% to œ13.6 million.
