Christiani & Nielsen is saving Dwr Cymru Welsh Water close to
œ1 million with its innovative installation of a 1,250m long
outfall using an entirely land-based technique more commonly used
in bridge construction.
The Thai-owned contractor is pushing the œ4.8million Lavernock
Long Sea Outfall along a low-friction track, into a pre-dredged,
6m-deep sea trench in the Severn Estuary, using 350t capacity
pushing jacks.
It is assembling the outfall in a clifftop yard at Lavernock by
butt-welding 9m sections of pipe into twelve 100m long 'strings,
each weighing 427t. These are then moved into position onton an
adjacent pre-formed launchway ramp using two, 5t crab winches.
