Bank nominee to run Ucatt
Unity Trust bank is to appoint its own business manager to help run
construction union Ucatt.
The move comes amid reports that the bank has been dissatisfied
with the way the union has been implementing its business plan.
General secretary George Brumwell confirmed on Tuesday than the
plan is under review.
Finances of the troubled construction union are coming under fresh
pressure from legislation which requires all workers to give their
written consent by the end of this month to the continued deduction
of their union dues by employers under check-off
arrangements.
The system is currently the source of some 90% of Ucatt's œ4.6
million subscription income.
George Brumwell said this week that he was pleased with the overall
rate of check-off renewals. He said the rate of renewals at
mid-July was about 80% nationwide.
