Watson's cover story
Watson Steel has now completed the bulk of the steel erection on
its œ1.4 million contract to protect Roman remains at the site
of a new development adjacent to the City of London's
Guildhall.
The Amec company is using almost 700t of steel to build a 48m x 33m
ground floor and temporary piling platform over the amphitheatre
ruins for the Corporation of London. The deck will be supported on
21 columns, fabricated from British Steel's largest universal
column system and measuring up to 16m in length.
It will act as a transfer platform for a new five-storey
building.
The columns, nine of which have been installed so far, finish at
the underside of the steel beams forming the transfer platform.
When the remaining 12 are in place, Watson will then start the
installation of twin webbed plate girders which will frame the
column heads into the existing steelwork. The platform load will
than be transferred onto the principal columns and the temporary
columns and some beams removed. Contract completion is scheduled
for the end of the year.
