Two Melville firms collapse
Two parts of the Melville Group - Carlton Waller and Carlton Beck -
were put into receivership on Tuesday by Coopers and Lybrand,
called in as administrative receiver two weeks ago. Carlton Benbow
Contracts is still afloat.
USA halves asbestos limits
American health and safety chiefs are trying to clamp down on the
re-emergence of asbestos in the country by halving the permitted
exposure levels to fibres. The move has been condemned by asbestos
companies in the USA.
Hong Kong runway may crack
A United Nations engineering consultant has claimed that the runway
at Hong Kong's Chep Lap Kok airport will crack when completed if
rock is not compacted during construction by a joint venture which
includes Costain. Repairs, he says, will cost millions.
Second Forth bridge gets OK
The Scottish Office is expected to give the go-ahead to build the
second Forth bridge by November. The bridge and related
infrastructure will cost œ250 million. It will be built,
financed and operated by the private sector. Four consortia have
expressed interest, including Trafalgar House/Balfour Beatty, and
Tarmac/T-Route/ Bouygues/Bilfinger & Berger.
New stations for Met Police
The Metropolitan Police is to spend œ100 million on building
16 new police stations in London over the next six years. Since
1988, it has modernised four bases and has built 12 new police
stations.
TH completes rock tunnels
Trafalgar House has completed excavation on the UK's largest rock
tunnelling project. The two undersea tunnels on the north and south
Cornish coast are part of South West Water's œ65 million
Penzance and St Ives sewage treatment scheme.
