Following a comfortable victory in Kempton's 6-furlong Sirenia
Stakes, jockey Pat Eddery is quoted as rating Art of War the best
2-year-old he has ridden so far this season. And the colt, who is
trained by Roger Charlton, has been quoted in some lists as the
favourite for next year's 2000 Guineas.
Art of War opened his account at Salisbury in early August in a
run-of-the-mill maiden event. Stepping up in class, he had the
listed Sirenia Stakes in the bag a full two furlongs from the post.
He did not eventually win by quite as far as seemed likely at that
stage - eventually coming home by three quarters of a length.
However, he was not unduly hard ridden and the second placed
Loyalise was in receipt of the 5lb fillies' allowance. Art of War
is certain to go on to further victories. His next target is
expected to be the Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket.
At Doncaster on Saturday the St Leger market is headed by recent
Newbury winner Red Route with Midnight Legend and Sacrament
disputing second spot in the betting. Each has some solid form
behind it and they are all improving. But none has truly impressed
thusfar as being in the top class. Broadway Flyer looks better
value at around 6-1 at the beginning of the week. He went off
second favourite for the Derby and his poor showing at Epsom was
later attributed to a minor lung infection. He appears to have
fully recovered and seems guaranteed to stay the trip. He may now
live up to his early season promise.
