Costain installs girders on railway bridge

Costain has installed six 46m long girders over the South Wales to London railway line as part of its œ23 million contract for the new M4 Gwent Approach road to the Second Severn Crossing.

The girders - fabricated by Rowecord - were installed in pairs weighing 106t using Grayston White and Sparrow's 500t Demag TC 32000 crane. A glass reinforced polymer enclosure was attached to the girders - designed by Maunsell - to aid bridge inspection and reduce maintenance.
