Wimpey denies green delay

Wimpey has denied claims that environmentalists have delayed a œ53 million contract on the M77 around Glasgow for Strathclyde Regional Council. The firm says it does not intend to be on site for several weeks.



Second Forth delayed

Tenders for a second Forth road bridge will have to await the outcome of a public inquiry, according to Scottish Secretary Ian Lang. The inquiry will be based on Scottish Office outline proposals rather than contractor designs as originally planned.



Tarmac fails house target

Tarmac has failed to reach its house completion target for 1994 thanks to two interest rate rises, selling just 6,267 houses against a target of 7,000. Overall, its profits of œ105 million are likely to be little affected due to stronger performances in the quarry and building materials divisions.

Stanhope acquisition

Alfred McAlpine Homes East has acquired Stanhope Cambridge from Stanhope Properties and now will have total control of a new settlement at Cambourne, 10km west of Cambridge.



Road rules speeded up

New rules aimed at speeding up road public inquiries have just come into force. The DoT revisions include giving pre-inquiry meetings formal status and only reading out summaries of written evidence at the inquiry.



Jaques joins Eversheds

City law firm Jaques and Lewis is joining Eversheds which will make Eversheds the second largest lawyer in the UK and the fifth largest in the world. The two firms will be known as Eversheds from June 1995.



25kg bag of plaster

The maximum weight for a bag of plaster will be 25kg from 1 January 1996. The move is in response to health and safety legislation on the risk of material handling, says the Gypsum Products Development Association.



Late payment survey

Nearly half the construction companies responding to a Forum for Private Business survey say they still see late payment as a major problem. With 48% saying they have to wait up to 90 days for payment, the construction sector was the hardest hit of all those asked.
