Steel production up
Steel production in the UK was 17.3 million tonnes in 1994, up by 4% on 1993, but still well short of the 19.0 million tonnes output back in 1988. Encouragingly, production in December at 330,000t was 32% higher than the figure for December 1993.
Communication award
Nottingham Trent University Student Julian Nuttall has won a prize for his communication skills in construction despite being deaf since birth. He collected a plaque and œ150 cheque from the sponsor, Montrose.

South African president Nelson Mandela has awarded Cementation Africa a merit award for export achievement.
