Road bidders should not sue
Attempts by contractors to sue the Government over lost money for
bids for abandoned road schemes do not stand a chance of success,
according to solicitor Baker & McKenzie. Disappointed bidders
will find the losses were 'an occupational hazard of the
business.'
Price limit appeal
South West Water is to axe 400 jobs including 170 from its three
operational divisions, in an attempt to cut costs. SWW has appealed
to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission against the setting of
price limits and is threatening to cut more jobs if it loses the
appeal.
M74 planning application
Strathclyde Regional Council is to submit a formal planning
application this week for the building of the œ200 million,
M74 northern extension. The 4.7 miles of three-lane motorway would
run through the south side of Glasgow to the Kingston
exchange.
UK sales up
Builders merchants' sales were up 5.8% nationally for the three
months September to November 1994, compared with the same period 12
months earlier. But when compared with the previous three months
(June-August) they were down 3.2%.
2-3% rise in house prices
The Nationwide building society expects house price rises of 2-3%
during 1995. But a separate report from stockbroker UBS warns that
households with negative equity are still increasing - up by 20% in
the final quarter of 1994, to 1.3 million.
Health and safety breach
Rolls Royce Nuclear Engineering Services is being prosecuted for
alleged breaches of health and safety law regarding the removal of
asbestos. The case stems from the alleged removal of more than 7t
of brown asbestos-insulated pipework from an external
car-park.

RIBA president Frank Duffy will present œ1000 prizes at the
CICA CAD Awards at the CICE on 21 February at the Business Design
Centre, London which include The Contract Journal Award for 2D
construction drawings.
