ZF push for transmission power

Confident about the future, German company ZF Friedrichshafen AG, a leading light in the world of off-highway driveline components has plenty to offer OEMs at this year's BAUMA.

In the last 18 months, the company claims it has introduced more than 25 new or improved products to its off-highway component line. Of particular interest is its latest development for backhoe loaders - a new powershift transmission.

Although Alfred Schobinger, director of construction equipment transmissions, admits the company has been slow to enter this particular market, he is confident about the transmission's future. The product, a WG 92-S4 four-speed fully synchronised powershift transmission - to be manufactured in the US - has already attracted the attention of at least one manufacturer.

The WG 92-S4, for use in backhoe loaders with nominal power ratings of 65kW, features a torque convertor and four forward/reverse speeds.

In addition to its backhoe transmission, ZF's innovative push will also be in evidence on the Terex stand.

Among Terex's new product line-up, which includes three ADTs and one rigid dumptruck, its 3066C model features ZF's new 270kW WG250 powershift transmission. Special features include a retarder, a lock-up clutch and an inter-axle differential.

Apart from reduced noise levels achieved with the aid of helical gears, the transmission offers improved power and performance according to Terex's product engineer, Tom McIlwain.

Terex's other two new ADTs, the 2566C and 4066C, which share stand space with its new rigid, the 3340, feature WG200 transmissions and are said to offer better bodies and hydraulic performance.

Other ZF developments include the HL70 - a two speed hydrostatic transmission for 13t wheeled excavators, the 75kW class WG100 transmission, the PLM 7 and PLM 9 transmissions for concrete truck mixers with capacities of 4-10m3, and the APL2000 line of steering axles for backhoes.

One product likely to impress the wheel loader operator is ZF's new driving control lever for single handed operation. With Ergo II - the next step on from Caterpillar's STIC system - all controls are integrated. A push button in the lever enables the operator to make quick adjustments to both direction and bucket position.
