Figures released this week by the National House-Building Council show a 21% decrease in the number of new home starts in January compared to the same month last year.



Prison work restarts

Construction work is to restart at Parkhurst prison next week after being suspended following the break out of three prisoners in January. Birse is managing the œ6.3 million refurb contract at the Isle of Wight jail.



West Coast upgrade

Railtrack's schedule of major improvement projects is unaffected by speculation over the œ1 billion upgrade of the West Coast Main Line. But a spokesman said the WCML may not be put forward as a Private Finance Initiative but would be handled by Railtrack itself after privatisation.

D&B code of practice

A new code of practice for design and build contracts is to be drawn up. It results from a campaign led by Roy Paramor, chief executive of JT Design Build, for a design and build forum to represent this sector of the market.



UK in forefront

A report on the cathodic protection of reinforced concrete was launched at the House of Commons on Monday (6 Feb). It says Britain was in the forefront of research and development in this method of preventing corrosion of steel reinforcement.



Amey appoints Adcock

Amey has appointed Roger Adcock as deputy managing director of its building subsidiary Amey Building. Adcock was previously group managing director of Mansell.

Lydney Containers

London-based plant hire specialists Shorco Group Holdings is to acquire the whole of the issued share capital of Lydney Containers Holdings - a Gloucester-based manufacturer of high security on-site accommodation and storage units.



UK Detention's inmates

out of control

UK Detention Services - a consortium of Mowlem, Sir Robert McAlpine and Corrections Corporation of America - has been accused by the Government's inspector of prisons of failing to adequately control prison inmates.
