The most exciting development in the Fiat-Hitachi mid-range
excavator line-up is the all-new FH85W, 8.5t wheeled 360¼
machine. The little unit bristles with innovations and rather
disproves the conventional belief that it is only economically
viable to equip big machines with the latest electronic technology.
Power is supplied by a Perkins 1004.4 direct injection 3.99 litre
diesel giving two outputs of 56kW at 2,000 rpm in travel mode and
52kW at 1,800 during digging. Three variable delivery swash plate
pumps supply the hydraulics, giving 64, 50 and 50 litre/min at
maximum speed while the main relief valve is set at 350 bars.
Between the pumps and the control levers is ESC (Electronic Speed
Sensing) and pressure summation systems while on the dash panel
there are no fewer than four power settings for digging and travel
and an automatic return to idling positions: L2 precision; L3
economy; L4 maximum productivity and L5 travel only.
The sophistication continues. The FH85W has conventional
hydrostatic four-wheel -drive via a variable displacement motor,
and three speed gearbox with high and low range box giving speeds
from 0-2 to 0-20kmh.
Unusually, both axles can be steered via a dash-mounted switch to
give either conventional four-wheel-steer, crab steer or front
wheels only. With all-wheel-steer engaged, the unit will turn
within 3.65m radius. With an upper structure tail radius of just
1.4m, the machine should be able to work comfortably in really
tight spots.
The cab with its huge glass areas provides excellent all round
visibility and to ease entry and exit, the steering wheel can be
adjusted from near vertical to car-like angles. Twin servo controls
take care of all digging and slewing actions with separate levers
for boom offset, stabilisers or dozer blade.
Front end equipment includes three different boom types and two
dipper lengths and all incorporate boom offsetting which, even with
the narrowest bucket, means the unit can dig outside the overall
machine width. The most popular combination in the UK will likely
be the mono boom with either the 1.85m or 2.2m dipper giving ground
level reaches of 6.7m or 7.0m and digging depths of 3.7m and 4.03m
respectively.
The second choice is a two- piece articulated boom, controlled by a
pair of rams which, because it is heavier, reduces payload at full
stretch for lifting duties, but will not make any noticeable
difference to bucket capacity when digging. The advantages are
increased outreach, digging depths, a 6.0m dumping height and the
ability to work in restricted head room.
An offset digging, or knuckle, boom with independent offsetting to
the standard boom offset means the FH85W can dig 1.9m, to the
dipper centre line, to the right and 1.45m to the left, outside the
machine width. With both offsets set at their maximum angles,
outreach at ground is 5.63m and digging depths only slightly less
than the mono boom at 3.6m and 4.0m, depending on boom
length.
The company lists six buckets ranging in widths from 280mm up to
800mm with capacities of 0.085m3 to 0.3m3. Breakout forces,
regardless of boom configuration and dipper lengths, are quoted as
5,200kg with digging forces of 4,400kg for the short dipper and
3,900kg for the long.
Twin-circuit, hub-mounted, oil-immersed, multi-disc brakes are
fitted to each wheel and should take care of stopping for the
lifetime of the machine. These are backed up by a separate failsafe
multi-disc oil-immersed parking brake which also provides an
additional lock while digging.
Both axles have planetary hub reductions and can steer through
35¼. The front oscillates +/- 7.5¼ and can be locked at
any angle from the cab. Dual 8.25x20 tyres are fitted all round.
The list of options is not long; the main one being whether to go
for the dozer blade and/or stabilisers, piping and valves for
hammers or other attachments, refuelling pump and radio.
Finally, later in the year, Fiat-Hitachi will introduce the FH95
which is a crawler based version of the FH85W. The upper structure
will be exactly the same, apart from the obvious in-cab changes of
substituting track levers for steering wheel, and a lower overall
height.
