McAlpine hits back at fresh abuse claims

Top 10 builder Alfred McAlpine was this week facing a demand that it be banned from Government contracts following allegations of contractual abuse and non-payment of subcontractors. The company has responded that the accusations 'are without foundation and do not reflect the facts of the cases mentioned.'

Dr John Marek, Labour MP for Wrexham, has tabled a Commons motion calling for the ban after he said he received complaints from two constituents who were subcontractors on the Wrexham Maelor hospital.

They are Ken Newall, a concrete and formwork specialist, and RMG Engineering. The former was declared bankrupt in December 1992. He claimed McAlpine owed him nearly œ100,000. The latter has gone into administrative receivership.

In a detailed statement McAlpine fiercely defended its position and said in both cases it had 'at all times acted properly within the terms and conditions of the respective contracts.'

The move comes hard on the heels of a separate action by the Aldershot-based Confederation of Construction Specialists which has advised its members to proceed with extreme caution in any contractual dealings with Alfred McAlpine.
