Orders down in 1994

The total value of new construction orders for the whole of 1994 was œ21.3 billion, up œ1.3 billion on 1993 figures according to the DoE. After adjusting for price increases this represents a 1% drop in volume. New orders for the last quarter of 1994 show a 9% decrease on the previous quarter and a 21% decrease on the last quarter of 1993. Infrastructure and public housing were worst hit.



Hard hats save 20 lives

The HSE estimates that around 20 deaths have been avoided each year since 'hard hat' regulations were introduced in 1990. Head injury rates have fallen substantially - fatal accidents to employees are 41% down, and 63% down for the self-employed.

Oxo two months late

Trollope & Colls' œ12.5 million refurbishment of the Oxo Building on the south bank of the Thames in London is running two months late because of a scaffolding collapse in 1993 and unforeseen ground conditions according to the developer.



PFI push by builders

A national programme of seminars to promote the PFI is being held by the BEC through March and April. Venues include Ascot, Manchester, Wetherby, Hinckley, Cambridge, and Bristol. Co-promoters are Masons and Ernst & Young.



BB to contest Acre Square writ

Balfour Beatty Building says it will be 'rigorously defending itself' against allegations of fraud over the construction of 5 Acre Square in London. Balfour and 12 other firms are being sued by developer Chestermount over the scheme (CJ, 9 February).



Rebel union ballot

The breakaway Electrical and Plumbing Industries Union is to ballot its members on a recommended merger with the TGWU. The union was formed when the main electrical union quit the TUC.



Sick Building Syndrome survey

A survey by the Building Services Research and Information Association claims to show that Sick Building Syndrome symptoms can be avoided in buildings with a well designed and maintained air conditioned system.



New plasterers president

Robert Atkin, head of family firm Plasterers, has been elected president of the Federation of Plastering and Drywall Contractors.
