Wiltshire-based G Pearce Civil Engineering - involved in the paving
contract for the new M4 Services (westbound) near Reading - has
been using a Blaw-Knox BK-191 paver with Omniscreed V to tackle the
work.
The œ750,00 contract called for the laying of 20,000t of
bituminous and asphalt materials.
Paver features include Blaw-Kontrol II - an accurate,
microprocessor-based control system that automatically maintains
the elevation of one side of the screed with respect to a reference
surface (grade), while maintaining the elevation of opposite side
of the screed in relation to the first slope.
Surfacing manager for G Pearce, Steve Tregelles, said: 'The choice
of paver was a difficult one for us to make. In the end, the
Blaw-Knox specification best suited our needs. The BK-191 is now
our main workhorse, replacing a BK-170 paver.'
Pearce's task has involved laying the road base, base courses and a
variety of wearing courses for the roads and parking areas.
A wearing course of asphalt with pre-coated chippings was specified
for high stress areas, such as the access roads and filling
station.
The hydraulically extendible Omniscreed V paves widths from 2.5m up
to 4.75m.
Pearce began work at the beginning of November. The Westbound
services are due to open by Easter this year.
