CHURCH-GOER WHO LIKES THE UNKNOWN
'It's the unknown - that's what I like about it,' said Gary Harper,
James Longley's award winning site manager on the construction of
the undercroft under the St Nicholas parish church.
Harper now has quite a record of working on historic buildings in
the south east and in 1993 his achievements were recognised with
the award of Site Manager of the Year for the southern region by
the CIoB.
This hard-earned record is based on his work on the redevelopment
of St John's Church at Eton College and at Seaford House in
Belgravia, both contracts on which he was able to exercise a great
deal of his own judgement.
This is the key to his enjoyment of this type of contract. With a
large number of unknown quantities hidden in the fabric of the
building the architects and engineers can only go so far in their
design. When the structure of the building is uncovered, the site
manager plays a leading role in finding the best solution to the
thorny problems revealed.
'You get a certain amount of licence,' said Harper. 'On this
contract I have been excited for the church.'
'We're creating something unique and I shall never have the
opportunity of doing something like this again.'
