Neglected schools need repair
A survey of the state of schools in England and Wales has found
that more than a quarter of them are in desperate need of
construction work to put right the crumbling buildings and leaking
roofs.
The study - carried out by the National Union of Teachers - found
that many schools have been forced to close part of their buildings
because of the problem.
In 1991, the National Audit Office put the cost of bringing school
buildings up to agreed standards at œ2 billion, but the NUT
now says that figure is much higher.
NUT general secretary Doug McEvoy said: 'It is up to the Government
to draw up a plan for the repair and maintenance to end the present
scandal of crumbling schools - years of neglect mean the cost of
repair has escalated from the œ2 billion mark.'
