Railway report says Europe spends more
An independent report into the UK rail and underground systems
claims that œ50 billion would have to be spent to bring it
into line with some continental countries.
The report was compiled by cost consultant Gardiner & Theobald.
Co-author Gordon Sanderson said the aim is to try to start a debate
on the railways.
'We just wanted to put rail systems into context,' he said. 'What
are our EU neighbours doing and can we afford to be different? What
is the investment in competing systems such as roads - around
œ20 billion - and is that the right balance?' The report shows
that France is spending œ22 billion on TGV infrastructure
alone, Germany œ54 billion and the Netherlands œ6.4
billion.
The report says the cost of just bringing the rail system into good
repair is œ11.8 billion with a further œ7.6 billion
needed for transport policies designed to increase rail use and
quality.
