Barr fined
Contractor Barr has been fined œ15,000 for two water pollution
offences which took place while working on the upgrade of the
A74(M) Glasgow-Carlisle road. The cases mark the end of a series of
prosecutions that have also seen Miller and Castelli-Girolla, two
other contractors working on the same project, fined œ40,000
and œ12,000 respectively.
Carlton Gate case resumes
Witnesses are expected to begin giving evidence today in the
long-running Carlton Gate œ20 million damages claim by Mowlem
against Eagle Star and architect Phippen Randall and Parkes. The
hearing resumed this week after delays while aspects of the case
were considered by the Court of Appeal in which Mowlem failed in
its appeal against rulings given by Judge Peter Bowsher.
HE restart
Work could restart on the Central Terminal Area of the Heathrow
Express within a few weeks when design work on the huge shaft which
will cut out the areas affected by the collapse is complete. The
running tunnel from the CTA to Terminal 4 is now complete and the
first of the main twin bore running tunnels into the CTA from the
north will be finished at the end of this month.
Vickers to head professions
Christopher Vickers has been appointed chairman-elect of the
Construction Industry Council, the umbrella body for the industry
professions. He is a senior partner with E C Harris and Partners
and a former president of RICS quantity surveyors division. He
succeeds Robin Harris at the CIC in June 1996.
Mowlem's Twickers boost
England's rugby triumph at Twickenham last Saturday was enjoyed in
person by 2,000 more spectators than was expected thanks to fast
work by Mowlem and project manager Roger Durrant.
The contractor, which is currently rebuilding the ground's west
stand, accelerated its programme in order to deliver the extra
seating in time for the crucial fixture.
Roofing man on top
The National Federation of Roofing Contractors has appointed Edward
Cowan as chief executive. He has been general secretary of the
federation for the past four years.
