Late project information equals claims... not to mention confusion
and bad relationships.
Complaints and queries from site which stem from the abysmal
quality of information fed through to them by distant designers can
be categorised as: unco-ordinated (conflicting information from
different sources), incorrect, incomplete (missing details) or 'not
properly distributed'.
Latham's answer to such woolly working practice is Co-ordinated
Project Information. CPI should have become normal practise years
ago, he thunders, adding that its use should be made part of the
Conditions of Engagement of the designers.
The Construction Industry Employers Council, in its submission to
Latham, pointed out that problems caused by a poor flow of
information have got worse during the last 10 years. Hence, CIEC
called for the appointment of lead designers, for a detailed
check-list on every project, a definition of the most common types
of drawing and a widely accepted guide to design management.
The lack of suitably trained design team leaders worries Randall.
'The trouble with making an architect leader, and put in a pivotal
position, is that I'm not sure they are the right people for
it.
'I'm an architect myself and our training isn't about leadership or
management.'
Action is already being taken to address Randall's concerns. The
fundamental revision of architects' training, currently underway,
aims to introduce a programme of instruction that will provide
future architects with those management skills needed in today's
environment.
Laing is moving towards CPI. Mike Silvie, Laing's business
development director, revealed: 'We have the techniques and they
are being refined all the time. Having AutoCAD as standard has made
CPI possible.'
Mowlem is keen on CPI, while Stanhope Properties is nearly there.
'We are using it on the Royal Opera House, for instance, where we
are advising,' reported Rogers.
Greycoat says CPI is coming naturally. 'There is not much more
linking needed,' said Vickery. 'There is a design efficiency
working through the system thanks to computerisation. Drawings are
no longer different, so all the parties can talk.'
