Our past comes back to haunt us
BackBites was sent a newspaper clipping last week from the London
Evening Standard. It included a rather interesting piece about
private finance of the railways. The article said that developers
were calling for equity for a new rail scheme for London.
Nothing strange in this - until you read the date on the paper - 17
June 1865. It was discovered by workers for Try Construction on
site recently.
The paper says the railway line was to run from Waterloo to
Whitehall and 13,500 shares were being offered at œ10 each to
finance the scheme.
In selling the scheme the company said: 'The new railway will
accommodate endless streams of traffic over Waterloo, Hungerford
and Westminster Bridges. The directors call attention to the
extraordinary success of the Metropolitan railway whose stock is
already at 40% premium.'
It seems the wheel has turned full circle - soon it will be time to
sell shares for the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. Unfortunately they
will be looking to raise more than œ135,000.
