Costain sells again
Costain this week sold its 40% stake in GKN Kwikform, the UK
scaffolding group, for œ11m. The firm says there is now
nothing else to sell. Discussions with other firms, with a view to
forging an alliance with Costain's contracting division,
continue.
Nuttall wins A525
Nuttall has been awarded the œ11m A525 Ruddlan bypass stage 2
contract by Clwyd County Council. Work includes 2km of dual
carriageway, two roundabouts and a 430m-long, 11-span viaduct over
the River Clwyd.
Housing down
UK housing starts were down 8% in the three months to February
compared with the previous three months while total completions
were down 1% on the same basis, says the DoE.
HE breakthrough
The first of Heathrow Express's two running tunnels will be
completed this week by Balfour Beatty. The tunnel has been dug by a
TBM and so was not affected by the NATM collapse last year. Repair
work on the collapse will start this month.
Camas profit
The Camas construction materials group increased its pre-tax profit
from œ10.98m to œ19.2m on a turnover of œ458m
boosted by acquisition in 1994.
Kew writ for NH
The Government is suing Norwest Holst and Marvel Services for
damages to the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew London in March 1989
following a flood which it claims was caused by the incorrect
installation of a faulty water main.
Receivers at Anglo Welsh
Anglo Welsh Construction has gone into receivership. According to
the most recent figures, the company turned over œ8.9m in
housing during 1993, and had been rapidly increasing sales in
social housing to stand at œ4.6m.
India boost
The potential for UK contractors to participate in the
modernisation of India's infrastructure is enormous, says the DoE
in a report published this week.
Atkins for Essex
WS Atkins is poised to takeover the highways department of Essex CC
from 1 June, after staff voted in favour of privatisation
proposals. A ballot announced on 4 April revealed approval from 74%
of staff.
