THE VOLVO VIKINGS ARE COMING
It's all change at Volvo, a new name and plenty of new products
from the wheeled loaders, excavators, rigid and articulated
dumptrucks. Having bought out its 50% stake from partner Clark, the
old name VME has been terminated in favour of Volvo Construction
Equipment Corporation.
Virtually all the wheeled loaders have been upgraded to C series -
which means more than just cosmetic changes. The company claims the
engines are cleaner, quieter and in many cases, more powerful as
well. The all new 46t L330C uses Volvo's own TD 164 diesel,
producing 366kW and driving through a Clark powershift with the
Volvo automatic transmission system. A four pump, load sensing
hydraulic system powers the Z bar front end to provide maximum
breakout and lift capacity.
An on-board Contronic computer system monitors all the machine's
functions and alerts the operator when servicing is due. For those
interested in the hauling side of the business, there is a new line
up of articulated dumptrucks, including the new top of the range
A40 and at the opposite end, and the new A20C which comes in with a
full 20t payload.

GHP-2800
The new GHP-2800 slipform paver is a modular design, fully
hydrostatic design specifically targeting the demands of
international contractors carrying out new and reconstruction of
highways, airport pavements and streets. It features an entirely
new telescopic frame which allows paving widths of between 3.6m and
7.5m, and up to 12m with extensions.
The Gomaco pivot legs reduce the overall machine width to just 2.5m
for transportation. European contractors and those from a number of
other countries where the 2.5m width road regulations apply, will
see the GHP-2800 as a real breakthrough.
The GHP-2800 is also fitted with the company's new Network
Controller. Gomaco introduced the first Micro Controller System at
Conexpo '87 to take concrete paving equipment into the digital age
and to assist operators with a user friendly system that can reduce
human error.
Working with engineers from Sunstrand-Sauer, Gomaco produced the
new system that controls paver propulsion, steering, grade and
cross slope. The heart of the Network Controller is a series of
interconnected electronics that communicate with each other,
enabling the system to gather, assess and display all relevant
information.
The system has some 60% less wiring, cable and connectors than
previous micro systems and, in common with all Gomaco systems, it
is designed to cope with the harsh environment of a paving job
site.

Bauma saw the launch of one of the best kept secrets of 1995, the
JCB 3CX 4x4x4. The new unit faithfully follows in the footsteps of
the 2CX and 4CX concept with equal sized wheels all round and three
mode steering system.
According to JCB, the new 3CX has been designed specifically to
meet of customers' needs for a four-wheel drive/steer machine
between the 48.7kW 2CX and 75kW 4CX, which, along with the
conventional two wheel steer 3CX, will continue to increase the
company's European market share.
The concept of a four-wheel steer and drive backhoe loader is
rapidly gaining acceptance in all markets around the world.
Currently four-wheel steer accounts for 23% of JCB's world backhoe
loader sales. In mainland Europe, four-wheel steer machines account
for a remarkable 31.2%.
The new 3CX uses the Perkins 1000 series engine developing 67kW to
drive both axles through the company's own Synchro shuttle
transmission. To get the best out of the unit in difficult
conditions, limited slip diffs in both front and rear axles is an
option. The 1.0m3 loader has parallel lift action and loadover
height of 3.2m and breakout force of 6.5t. For added versatility,
the fully automatic Hitchmaster can be specified to swap front end
attachments without the operator leaving the cab. The Extradig
extending dipper is standard and gives the unit a quoted digging
depth of 5.9m and, with just over 200¼ bucket rotation, gives
good material retention and long flat bottom trenching
capabilities.
The cab is standard JCB backhoe loader design, and that means
comfortable and quiet. Noise levels are claimed to be the lowest of
any backhoe loader at 76dB(A).

MACHINES
ABG, the European Road Machinery Division of Ingersoll-Rand, has
launched the Titan 255 wheeled paver which, it claims, introduces a
completely new design to the paver market with features such as
optional front-wheel drive to create an all-wheel drive system and
load dependent torque control to the front wheels.
Standard features of the 255 include height adjustable augers to
adapt the screed to produce various layer thicknesses, ultrasonic
sensors for contact free material control and a novel system which
compensates for screed load to prevent the screed from sinking into
the new surface material when the paver is stationary.
The theoretical rate of the new Titan is 500t/hr with the maximum
layer thickness of 300mm. The 2.5m screed can be hydraulically
extended to 5.0m, and with extensions has a maximum width of 6.0m.
Power comes from a water-cooled Deutz BF6M 1012 diesel which is
said to be quiet, economical and environmentally friendly.

BITE
Esco launched its new Super V tooth and adaptor system for
hydraulic excavators, face shovels wheeled and crawler loaders.
Based on the Vertalok system, the Super V is available in 14
adaptor sizes, V-13 to V-81, which are welded to the bucket, and up
to nine different tooth shapes.
Esco claims that installation of, or conversion to, Super V is a
quick and easy solution that can be performed in the field. The
adaptors, made from easy weld alloy steel are welded to the cutting
edge of the bucket. Teeth are then fitted by inserting into the
adaptor and turning through 90¼ and secured with a single pin.
The Super V has been tested for over one year on different machine
types and in temperatures below -40C. Esco says the most important
characteristic of the system is the slender tooth profile which
allows easy penetration coupled to great durability. The resulting
reduction in digging time, fuel savings, reduced point loss and
downtime make the Super V a cost effective solution. Details: enter
714 on card BSP STRIKES A CHORD WITH HYDRAULIC HAMMER
BSP has introduced an all new hydraulic hammer, the HH1.5, designed
to drive small tubular, H piles and steel sheet piles, either
singly or in pairs. In the crane suspended form, the hammer has an
operating weight of under 4t and comes complete with inserts to
suit a range of piling.
BSP claims the HH1.5 has a high power to weight ratio and high
impact energy in the region of 1,850kgm per blow. The double acting
effect gives a blow rate of around 80 per minute.
Impact energy can be varied, depending upon soil and site needs.
The stroke can also be infinitely varied between minimum and
maximum with full control over the blow rate.
Power for the HH1.5 is provided by the BSP hydraulic power
pack-Minor. This uses a Deutz FL913 air cooled diesel with an
output of 53kW. Details: enter 716 on card HYDRAULIC EXCAVATOR
PIONEER
LAUNCHES H 455S SUPER SHOVEL
Since 1954 when Demag launched its first all hydraulic excavator,
more than 300 heavy to super-heavy (100t and above) units have been
supplied to quarries and mines around the world.
The new H 455S (the S stands for Super shovel) is designed to work
with dumptrucks in the 150t to 240t class in three to five cycles,
depending on materials and bucket size.
The unit is powered by a pair of Cummins 840kW diesels, but an
electric drive with a 1,700kW motor is also available . A total of
six pumps with a combined flow of 4,500 litre/min power all drive
and digging functions through open circuits for improved cooling
and oil filtration.
Standard equipment includes a 25m3 bullclam bucket and front end
that can work to face heights of 9.5m. If required, face heights up
to 15m can be reached which is an advantage when the material must
be dug directly from formation without pre-blasting.
From a height of 7.7m, the operator has a clear view of both bucket
and dumptruck. The cab is air conditioned, sound proofed and
spacious and as one now expects, both hydraulics and engines are
computer controlled. The ESC system keeps the operator permanently
informed of the condition of the major components and facilitating
daily service checks as well as monitoring and recording all
relevant data.
For transportation, the H 455S can be dismantled into handy
components. The heaviest single package after breakdown are the
track frames which weigh in at 70t apiece.
Details: enter 711 on card A HALL FULL OF 23 NEW CAT MACHINES
As in Bauma's past, Caterpillar had taken over the entire Hall 25
and showed over 23 brand new Cat machines, plus a number of
upgraded models on show.
The new machines include a complete range of compactors,
telehandlers, small and mid-range excavators, face shovels, wheeled
loaders, graders and dozers. The 914G wheeled loader and its
counterpart ,the IT14G, present the company with huge potential
sales in the growing small loader and even faster expanding
materials handling sectors.
Both units were designed using virtual reality techniques and
feature for the first time on a Cat wheeled machine, hydrostatic
transmission. The Hystat power train is based on a high pressure,
closed loop circuitry which, claims the company, provides a broader
range of power and performance with less operator input than
conventional converter driven transmissions.
There are now over 60,000 Cat High drive tracked machines working
since the concept was introduced in 1978. Bauma was the worldwide
launch of the latest offering, the 47.5t D9R with more power,
larger blades, load sensing hydraulics and the option of
differential steering.
Power output is up 10% to 302kW and torque rises 44%, from the 3408
V8 turbocharged and aftercooled diesel. The drive is taken through
Cat's own torque divider and then into the planetary three speed
powershift. The D9R is now the largest dozer in the range with the
differential seat option which, Cat claims, offers faster
manoeuvring, and uninterrupted power to both tracks while turning.
