Declan Kelly dies
Declan Kelly, best known as the developer behind the troubled
Carlton Gate Housing project, has died suddenly at the age of 52
from a heart attack. Kelly set up the Carlton Gate Development
Company in June 1987 and held a 75% stake, but the company went
into receivership in early 1990.
Merchants to join 'Super CIEC'
The Builders Merchants Federation has been invited to join a
strengthened CIEC. It has already been agreed that the Major
Contractors' Group (see page 10) should join, bringing the
membership to six with the FMB, BEC, FCEC and the BMP. A toned down
annual budget of œ180k is now envisaged.
June trial for digger driver
Digger driver Peter John Rutter, who is charged with causing GBH to
a roads protestor during a demonstration at Tarmac's M65 site last
September, has had his trial committed to Preston Crown Court in
June.
Ridley new ICE president
Professor Tony Ridley has been elected president of the Institution
of Civil Engineers following the death in office of Dr Edmund
Hambly last month. Professor Ridley holds the chair in Transport
Engineering at Imperial College.
JCB goes fifth
JCB is now the world's fifth biggest construction equipment, said
Sir Anthony Bamford, chairman, at Bauma, the Munich construction
equipment fair. Ex-works shipments jumped from 11,500 in 1993 to
over 18,000 last year. Annual output per employee rose from five to
nearly 6.5.
Creditors help Gallagher
NT Gallagher, the Salford-based civil engineering firm suing
Mercury over a payment row, has entered into a commercial voluntary
arrangement with its creditors - the creditors have agreed to wait
until Gallagher earns the necessary funding to pay its debts.
Britannia profits
Britannia Group has returned to the black with pre-tax profits of
œ1.66 million after making a loss of œ503,000 last
year.
Ibstock seeks Tarmac bricks
Ibstock has approached Tarmac with a view to buying its
brick-making operations. If given the go-ahead, the deal would net
Tarmac œ80-œ90 million.
