'1' not to remember

Strange goings on with the telephones this week. Construction firms were caught up with the general confusion with adding the extra digit to their phone numbers. But it seems the Federation of Civil Engineering Contractors has some special arrangement with BT. On Tuesday (18 April), the FCEC's old 071 phone number was still working - but the Building Employers Confederation and Highways Agency numbers, among others, would only accept calls with the extra digit. Why the special treatment? Perhaps BT is aware of how keenly civil engineers embrace change.
