Road price report delay

The publication of a œ3 million report into road pricing in the UK has been postponed by Transport Secretary Brian Mawhinney. Draft copies of the report which took three years to compile have been shelved and will not now be published until this summer at the earliest.



Clause 4: no say for Ucatt

The self-styled premiere construction union, Ucatt, will have no say in this weekend's special Labour conference on the controversial revision of clause four of the Party's constitution. The union is unable to participate because it has fallen behind with its affiliation fees. A spokesman declined to reveal how much Ucatt owes the Labour Party.

Process sector forms group

The process industries have formed their own special group to feed the sector's views, needs, and experiences directly into the Construction Industry Board, which is overseeing implementation of the Latham report. The Process Industries Latham Group is chaired by Norman Dunlop, joint managing director of Foster Wheeler Energy, and has been set up by the Institution of Chemical Engineers.



NVQ crisis call

The heating and ventilating industry has warned that the sector is facing a crisis over its National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs). Training leaders say that, unless there is an improvement in the registration and certification of trainees, some qualifications could be cancelled through lack of take-up.



BACMI man retires

Robert Phillipson OBE, who became the first director general of British Aggregate Construction Materials Industries in 1982 has retired from the federation. He is succeeded by Simon van der Byl.



Firms increase Tory gifts

Contractors are beginning to increase their contributions to the Tory party's coffers after four years of slashing donations. Tarmac raised its gift from œ12,500 in 1993 to œ15,000 in 1994, while Taylor Woodrow has upped its handout from œ5,000 to œ25,000.



March mortgages up

Building society lending increased sharply in March with new commitments increasing to œ3,666 million from œ2,697 million the previous month.
