Trench Wand solves M27 fibre optic cable contract

Site access, restricted working space, permanent boundary walls, and motorway crash barriers are problems often encountered by contractors and utility companies involved in the installation of underground communication cables, water, gas and electricity services.

To overcome these problems, LD Bourgein (Oxford), the sole UK dealer for the seven model range of Case trenchers, offers contractors the Trench Wand attachment.

Designed by managing director, Roger Bourgein, the patented Trench Wand is essentially a hydraulically operated narrow trencher which can be mounted to a trenching machine or the dipper arm of backhoe loaders or hydraulic excavators, allowing the host machine to dig trenches from 1,000mm to 2,000mm in depth and from 100mm to 450mm in width.

Apart from customising the top mounting bracket to suit a particular machine, no other modifications are required - provided the necessary hydraulic circuitry and valves are in place.

Oil flow and pressure from the host machine's hydraulic system of up to 150 litres per minute and 410 bar respectively are more than sufficient to drive the attachment.

The advantages of the unit were demonstrated recently on the M27 where the subcontractor installed a fibre optic communication cable along a 10,000m section of the M27 carriageway between junctions 10 and 12 near Portsmouth.

The subcontractor used the attachment, model TW75, mounted on a Mecalac 11CXi, to dig the required 750mm deep by 300mm wide narrow trench on a steeply sloping bank running alongside the motorway's hard shoulder. Because the cabling had to be laid approximately 2m from the verge of the hard shoulder and up a steep bank, there were few machine options open.

Following technical discussions with Bourgein and the Mecalac dealer, it was decided that the Trench Wand/Mecalac combination would meet the requirements of the job.

The Mecalac's tail swing of 250mm, enabled it to work round the clock with only a hard shoulder closure. Throughout the operation, according to the subcontractor, the 8t 11CXi, powered by a 56kW air-cooled Deutz engine had no problem handling the 1t Trench Wand even when working at a reach of 5m.

Bourgein's range of Trench Wands comprises five models: the TW125 and TW762 - suitable on backhoes - and the TW75, TW75HD and TW150 - suitable for hydraulic excavators.
