Prescott attacks PM's speech
The Prime Minister's words bear no comparison with the reality,
said John Prescott, Labour deputy leader.
Prescott said towns and cities are suffering the blight of Tory
mismanagement, with almost 2 million homes in Britain classed as
officially unfit for human habitation, and 3.8 million in need of
urgent repairs.
The deputy leader said that the money spent renovating older and
substandard council estates was down from œ7 billion in
1979/80 to œ2.5 billion in 1995/96.
An SRB assessment by the University of Birmingham, which was quoted
by Prescott, calculated that cumulatively over œ6 billion will
be removed from public sector regeneration programmes between
1993/94 and 1997/98, the result of a 21% reduction in the DoE's
spend.
