Richard Budge investigated

Following claims in a Panorama programme, Richard Budge - head of RJB Mining - has confirmed that he was investigated by the DTI because of his directorship in failed contractor AF Budge. The DTI considered barring him from holding office as a director at the time RJB was bidding for British Coal, but decided to take no action. AF Budge collapsed with debts of œ90 million in 1992.



Treasury line is 'unhelpful'

The Treasury has been accused by Labour of taking an 'unhelpful line' on moves to create a central prequalification system for contractors after a Minister said he 'doubts whether excluding certain companies from bidding for public sector work merely because they were not on a register could be justified on value for money grounds.'

HSE hits out at PS job...

The Health and Safety Executive's chief construction inspector Stuart Nattrass has spoken out against moves by consultants to establish a separate planning supervisor profession following the introduction of the new CDM regs (see page 13).



...and IPS is launched

An Institution of Planning Supervisors has been officially launched. It is independent of specific professions and endeavours to address the HSE's concerns about the role.



MoD plant auction

ADT Auction is to hold a sale on behalf of the Ministry of Defence building and civil engineering plant and equipment on 17 May which will feature more than 400 lots.



Firms look to buy plant

A survey by Lombard Business Finance shows that 72% of 450 finance directors with construction firms plan to invest in at least one major asset in the next three months.



Bovis in SA jv

Bovis has formed a joint venture with Thebe Properties, part of black South African business grouping, Thebe Investments. The company, called Thebe Bovis Construction Management, will provide construction management services to public and private ventures in South Africa.



Bryant: a Gold winner again

Bryant has been made Gold Award winner for the third year running by The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.
