Tunnel hitch on Jubilee Line
Jubilee Line contractor McAlpine-Wayss & Freytag-Bachy is to
carry out modifications to the sealing system around the bearings
at the head of its two tunnelling machines.
Some deterioration has been discovered during an examination of the
machines prior to beginning their excavation under the River
Thames. The machines - named Sharon and Tracey - have completed
drives on contract 107 from North Greenwich to Canning Town and
have since advanced under the Blackwall Tunnel and towards the
river for a second time.
'Further investigations are under way but the contractor
anticipates being able to start the river crossings shortly,' said
a Jubilee Line spokeswoman. 'As the tunnelling is some weeks ahead
of its required programme, any delays can be accommodated in the
overall programme. The project team endorses this precautionary
examination before the TBMs enter the Thanet Sands area.'
