Arup for CrossRail
Ove Arup has been appointed by the Government to look at a cheaper
and viable alternatives to the œ2.6 billion CrossRail scheme
which was all but killed off last year by an MP's committee last
year. The firm will look at smaller scale alternatives.
BB/Amec strikes deal...
A payment dispute on Balfour Beatty/Amec's Jubilee Line Extension
contract 102 has been resolved according to the contractor. More
than 40 formworkers were angry about low pay rates. The contractor
would not comment on the new deal.
...and reaches Green Park
Meanwhile tunnelling on the contract has reached Green Park. The jv
has been achieving 200m a week of tunnel compared to the
140m-160m/week of tunnel required by the programme.
Highways Agency theft
Thieves raided six floors of the HA building in London ripping
circuitry boards from 250 computers. The break-in happened just
days before the building was hit by fire (see page 3).
TH tops and bottoms
TH has carried out a simultaneous topping and bottoming out
ceremony at the 16,000m2 Corn Exchange building being constructed
for British Land in the City of London. The building is due for
completion in March 1996.
Harding slams government
Chartered Institute of Building president Colin Harding has called
on the Government to have an urgent rethink on the use of trust
funds following the publication of the consultation paper on the
Construction Contracts Bill (see analysis on page 12). He accused
the Government of pandering to clients and backing away from its
responsibility in not legislating for the funds.

Fairview spends
Fairview New Homes plans to spend œ20 million on expanding its
landbank by the end of June. The firm says the move comes because
high prices in the last year forced it into a virtual buying
moratorium but now prices have cooled off.
