1,000-miles Inverness to Dover Route

Last year, more than 100 local authorities showed great enthusiasm for this, the 'spine' of the Millennium project.

In the absence of central transport funding for cycling, the local authorities who have already made a start have utilised derelict land grants, countryside grants, leisure and tourism funds. Others have taken advantage of European grants.

Changes in the rules for the allocation of local transport funding last year, which introduced the concept of 'package bids', have opened the way to transport provision for cycling, both on and off-road. With Millennium Fund support, the Inverness to Dover route would be built by the year 2000.
