Restrictions on waste in kilns

Cement manufacturers' plans to reduce cement costs by fuelling their kilns with industrial waste were dealt a serious body blow this week by the decision by the Environment Select Committee to recommend tight restrictions on the use of industrial waste in cement kilns.

This follows an inquiry into the trial burning of fuels derived from chemical waste which Blue Castle, Castle and Rugby Cement are carrying out at six plants.
