urgent repair

Five thousand miles of major roads is in need of urgent repair and a further three thousand miles will wear out in the next four years according to a BRF report this week. The report reveals that the quality of roads has declined in eight out of 10 regions across England and Wales.

midland metro

The West Midland Transport Authority has raised the œ21.2 million needed to complete financing for the œ145 million Midland Metro project. The DoT still has to approve the project, which will be designed, built and operated by John Laing and Ansaldo Trasporti.

small construction

Guidance for small construction sites has been published by the Health & Safety Executive. It offers advice to general builders, specialist contractors and civil engineering firms employing up to 20 people.

sales rise

Latest sales figures from the Builders Merchants Federation show a 3.5% rise (February to April 1995) over the previous three months. However sales were still 4.9% below the same period last year.

Ucatt pickets demand merger vote

Pickets greeted members of the new, lay executive council of Ucatt when they held their first meeting on Tuesday. They were urging the new executive to carry out last year's delegate conference decision to ballot the membership on a merger with the TGWU.

Dixon to doe

Steven Dixon, a sales manager with Willmott Dixon, has been seconded to the Department of the Environment until the end of the year. Dixon will be working in the Construction Sponsorship Directorate where his role will be to represent the interests of the industry to Government.

Risk management consultancy Willis Corroon Hinton has joined with engineering group Acer Consultants to launch a planning supervisor service to help construction firms meet their commitments under the recently launched Construction (Design & Management) Regulations.

Doug Weston, director of Mowlem's major projects division, is moving to the Millenium Commission as director of projects. Mowlem says the move will not affect them in prequalifying for Millenium projects.
