Concern for the environment has increased in recent years and
clients are more sensitive to the environmental impact of their
buildings.
Launched in 1990 by the Building Research Establishment, BREEAM is a voluntary scheme designed to highlight this impact.
It covers the local environment of the building, its indoor environment, the safety and security of its occupants and the more global concerns of atmospheric pollution and the depletion of material resources. BREEAM hopes to set standards which are independently assessed, and minimise false claims of environmental friendliness.
Assessment charges range from œ1,500 to a maximum of œ3,500.
